Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA 65-Inch 4K 7 Series

An Amazon Lover’s Dream

This TV from Samsung is a Fire TV, and that comes with some perks. If Amazon Prime is your main source of streaming and you already have an Alexa or two in your home, the advantages here are clear, but there’s plenty to love even if you haven’t bought into the whole Amazon ecosystem. It offers support for Dolby Vision, a choice that offers perhaps the best balance of content and color quality. The low refresh rate means this isn’t the best choice for gaming, but it’s our best all-around 4K TV for the average consumer with a reasonable budget.

Sony XBR65X900F 65-Inch 4K Smart LED TV

High Dynamic Resolution That Really Pops

Depending on where you live, you might have to look for deals to get the Sony XBR65X900F under budget, but this premium 65-inch TV is definitely among the best on the market. This TV has just one weakness – a lack of good visibility at wider angles – but it excels in practically every category and is one of the best choices for gaming and watching films. The quality of the 4K resolution and HDR is phenomenal, and the input lag for gaming is barely even recognizable. And the solid motion handling means you won’t have to worry about blur in action scenes.

TCL 65-Inch Class 6-Series 4K QLEDHDR Roku Smart TV

Possibly the Best Roku TV Around

Whether you need a bright screen or vivid colors, the TCL 6 Series can provide both for a reasonable price. SDR mode can hit a brightness high enough to look clear and crisp even during the middle of the day and an HDR mode that provides a great deal of vibrancy when it’s time to turn out the lights and watch a movie. If you’re looking for the best contrast and colors, this Roku TV should certainly be on your ‘best of’ shortlist. Gamers will also love the fact that it registers almost no input lag and promises a refresh rate of a full 120 Hz.

Pros

  • Incredibly vivid color reproduction
  • Looks great even in bright rooms
  • Contrast split among multiple zones

LG 65SM8600PUA Nano 8 Series 65-Inch 4K UHD Smart LED (2019)

One of the Smartest TVs Around

With its IPS display, the LG SM8600 is a great choice if you’re having friends over and need a wide viewing angle to accommodate, but the one place where it suffers is in its contrast ratio. But put it in an appropriately lit room, and it will excel beyond what its low price tag would suggest. The whole TV is built upon the LG ThinQ tech infrastructure – an artificial intelligence that offers easy connectivity with most virtual assistants. The inclusion of both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision means everything will look great and sound great, and it’s also compatible with WISA speakers.

Resolution4K
HDMI Ports4
USB Ports3

Pros

  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Great sound system can be expanded
  • Vibrant display thanks to Nano Color
  • Excels at wide viewing angles

Cons

  • Contrast ratio is below average

Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA 65-Inch 4K UHD 7 Series UHD Smart TV (2019)

Meticulously Balanced Specs

This TV from Samsung isn’t the best at everything, but it is among the best 4K TVs in terms of overall balance. If you want a TV that can work well with just about anything, this might be the best model for you. The color accuracy looks great without any alteration, so it’s ideal for both single-player games and watching movies, and it similarly offers some pretty great gray uniformity. The included OneRemote can also control a wide variety of integrated devices. That said, it falls a little short with its maximum brightness, and the width of its viewing angles isn’t the best we’ve seen.

Resolution4K
HDMI Ports3
USB Ports2
Rate60 Hz
HDRHDR10+

Pros

  • Alexa and Google Assistant support
  • Purcolor for wider color coverage
  • Very low input lag
  • Above-average contrast ratio

Cons

  • Doesn’t perform well in bright rooms

Sony X800G 65-Inch TV 4K UHD Smart LED TV 2019

The X800G from Sony suffers in terms of picture quality in bright rooms and has poor input lag, but if you aren’t looking to game and have the right environment, it’s among the best for simply watching TV. No matter what angle you look at it from, this TV comes with some great image quality, and the picture benefits even more from the above-average motion handling. And if you do decide you want to game, you can always scale down the video quality. That’s because it offers image resolutions of 1080p and 1440p in addition to the 4K image format.

Resolution4K
HDMI Ports4
USB Ports
Rate120 Hz
HDRHDR10

Pros

  • Great image quality at wide angles
  • Some of the best motion handling
  • Upscaling for picture resolution below 4K
  • Built on the Android operating system

Cons

  • Not a great choice for TV gaming

Hisense 65H9F 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Android Smart ULED TV HDR10 (2019)

We’ll be blunt here. The 65H9F from Hisense is an expensive 4K TV from a lesser-known manufacturer, but this TV somehow manages to exceed its exorbitant price tag in terms of performance. The picture quality can give even the best TVs in this price range a run for their money in terms of picture quality. Support is available for the two predominant HDR formats, and this TV makes use of full-array local dimming to offer an exceptional contrast ratio even if the lighting isn’t just right. And with Motion Rate 480 tech, even chaotic live broadcasts will look great.

Resolution4K
HDMI Ports4
USB Ports
Rate240 Hz

Pros

  • Fluid motion and little blur
  • Built on the Android TV OS
  • Peak brightness of 1000 nits
  • Includes a dedicated gaming mode

Cons

  • Menu navigation can be sluggish

LG 65-Inch 65SM8600 Ultra HD HDR Smart LED NanoCell TV w/AI ThinQ 2019

Looking to build out a whole entertainment center at a flat cost? Like most other LG models, the 65SM8600PUA is built on the clever ThinQ artificial intelligence and includes a Nano Cell panel that offers a greater range of the color spectrum and more vivid picture quality than most traditional HDR formats. It’s also one of the best TV models for gamers thanks to its low input lag and a great response time. Taking all that into consideration, the inclusion of a wireless keyboard, soundbar, flat wall mount kit, and six outlet surge protectors just makes a great deal even better.

Pros

  • Rich color via Nano Call display
  • Low input lag, high response time
  • Built on ThinQ AI
  • Comes with tons of accessories

Cons

  • HDR is a little underwhelming

VIZIO P-Series Quantum 65-Inch Class Ultra HD HDR Smart TV

This P-Series TV from Vizio stands head and shoulders even among some of the best TVs for gaming, although it’s great for watching movies and TV as well. It sports a blindingly fast refresh rate of 240 Hz along with above-average input lag. Local dimming further improves its versatility and contrast ratio in darker rooms, and it even supports chroma 4:4:4 so it can pull double duty as a monitor and confidently bridges the gap between entertainment and productivity. It also supports multiple different HDR formats, giving you a much wider range of HDR content to choose from.

Resolution4K
HDMI Ports5
USB Ports1

HDRHDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG

Pros

  • A great choice for gaming
  • Supports Siri and Apple Home
  • Brightness of up to 1100 nits
  • Includes 200 local dimming zones

Cons

  • Streaming app interface is weak

SKYWORTH Q20300 65-Inch 4K UHD LED HDR A53 Quad-CORE Android TV

Whether you’re looking to stream movies, play games, or listen to music, the Skyworth Q20300 is among the best smart TVs under $1,000. The quad-core A53 processor strips download times to almost nothing regardless of what you’re trying to run, while the smart remote offers support for both Amazon and Google smart assistants. Special attention has been paid to the sonic experience here. 4K TVs under $1,000 often skimp on speakers, but Skyworth manages to achieve a virtual surround sound experience without having to rely on any external speakers. And with its Infinity Screen, the spaces around your TV will seem barely even there.

65-Inch TVs Under $1,000 Buyer’s Guide

If you’re buying a TV, 65-inch models are the way to go. You can easily get TVs of this size, with solid picture quality and all the core features, for comfortably under a thousand dollars. But which other factors do you need to pay attention to when you want to buy a great TV? That’s what the back half of this guide is for. We’ll run you quickly through the important specs and features you should be paying attention to when you want the best TV for your home.

Resolution

The best picture quality you’ll find in most models is a 4K display. With a picture resolution four times the quality of Full HD and a price that’s fairly reasonable, there’s no reason to settle for anything less than 4K. Even if you happen to find a used FHD model that’s deeply discounted, we still think 4K TVs are the smart investment. Since 4K is quickly becoming the standard broadcasting format, this will pay better dividends down the road.

High Dynamic Resolution

Until 8K finally becomes an affordable standard, it looks like HDR is positioned to be the leading improvement in picture quality. HDR isn’t a resolution but instead expands the color gamut to provide more detailed and vibrant results. That said, HDR isn’t available on all TVs, and it will look much better on 4K TVs. There are a few HDR formats out there, but you should pay the most attention to those that support HDR10, HDR10+, and/or Dolby Vision.

Ports

If you’re connecting any device to your TV, chances are that it uses an HDMI cord. While there are a few devices that don’t come with a compatible output for HDMI, anything made in the last decade or so should. The real question is how many HDMI ports you need. Most TVs come with at least a couple, but you’ll want one for all of your devices. Investing in a smart TV can also free up some space since these TVs don’t need a separate device for streaming.

You won’t find USB ports on all TVs, but they’re a convenient feature to have. With a USB port, you can share all of your favorite videos and photos directly to the TV screen without the need for an internet connection. You can even do cool things with some TVs like set up family photo slide show screensavers.

Refresh Rate

Refresh rate tells you how many times the screen refreshes in a second. It won’t be a big deal for those just looking to watch movies and TV shows, but gamers should try to seek out TVs with a decent refresh rate. Anything that offers 120 Hz or more should work just fine as a gaming TV.
