Razer Releases Stormtrooper Gaming Peripherals

Are These The Ultimate Gifts for Gamer Star Wars Fans?

Few people would be surprised to hear that there’s a decent amount of overlap between gamers and Star Wars fans. Star Wars themed gaming merchandise is nothing new, but when a brand as well regarded as Razer puts their know-how behind some officially branded Star Wars peripherals, it’s worth paying attention. We’re here to help you decide whether their new Stormtrooper themed mouse, keyboard, and mousepad are worth your time.

Unified Design

Licensing partnerships can often be slapdash relationships built to cynically milk a brand, but Razer’s design team really outdid themselves this time. The black and white color scheme of the stormtroopers means that they had a pretty classically pleasing design base to work with, but all three items in this series lean hard into the stormtrooper aesthetic while still managing to work well together and without coming across as too gaudy.

The keyboard itself is particularly handsome. For the most part, it could stand on its own without the stormtrooper branding. The gradated white, black, and gray is distinct without being loud, and the design complements the high profile mechanical keys well. Swapping out the escape key for an Imperial symbol is a cute flourish. The presence of a small Imperial stormtrooper in the corner unifies the theme without overwhelming it, and both the stormtrooper himself and the lines on the keyboard match up nicely with their parallel elements on the mouse pad.

The mouse’s design is both incredibly on brand with the Star Wars theme and potentially more controversial. Designed to look like a stormtrooper helmet, it takes a clever idea that loses some of the subtlety inherent in the pad and the keyboard. Whether it works for you will probably come down to how much of a Star Wars fan you are (but if you’re buying this set, chances are good you’ll like it).

The Keyboard

Razer isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel with the peripherals here. Take out the design flourishes of the keyboard and you’re left with the traditional BlackWidow Lite. Fortunately, that’s a good thing. The BlackWidow is one of the most phenomenal gaming keyboards in its price range. Razer has made a name for themselves in the past few years for creating mechanical keys that can rival Cherry, and they don’t skimp with the BlackWidow. The orange switches have a nice, tactile responsiveness, and they can be fitted with orange rings to run nearly silently.

Razer’s impressive approach to RGB lighting is in peak form here. The full RGB spectrum is available on a key by key basis, and it makes use of the industry leading Synapse 3 platform for programming. The white default lends a level of classiness and unified consistency to the keyboard that’s often missing in more traditional gaming peripherals. It’s also fairly compact and very lightweight. If you’re looking for a keyboard you can pack up with your other peripherals and take with you everywhere, you won’t find many options better than the BlackWidow Lite.

The Mouse

Razer couldn’t have picked a more fitting gaming mouse in terms of shape for inclusion in this set. This Razer Atheris may be designed to resemble a stormtrooper helmet, but its general form looks like a riff on a traditional Star Wars starfighter design. But they were clearly thinking about more than just aesthetics here. The Atheris is one of the better gaming mice that Razer produces. It offers an impressive 7200 DPI optical sensor and wireless support through the use of a basic USB dongle. Razer boasts that it can achieve up to 350 hours of consistent usage on a single pair of AA batteries.

Whether or not the Atheris is suited to your style of play will be a matter of personal preference. The Atheris is a smaller mouse with a low profile back, making it a great choice for quick play that requires rapid movements. That’s not a criticism. There’s no mouse design that works right for every gamer. And from the responsiveness of the buttons to the contoured design of the sides to the satisfactory resistance of the notched wheel, this is a great model through and through. It can also be adjusted using the Synapse 3 software platform. Regardless, the small size makes it a great choice for laptop gaming.

The Mouse Pad

Mouse pads for gaming often tend to be pretty hit or miss, but the Goliathus mouse mat used for this set is absolutely sumptuous. A little over 35 inches in length, it’s perfectly sized for the compact mouse and keyboard included here while still leaving room for your phone. It’s large enough to comfortably accommodated a dedicated office desk but also small enough to fit the confines of a gaming cafe or other smaller environment.

And best of all, the build quality is rock solid across the board. The mat itself is incredibly soft and comfortable to the touch, and the stitching along the exterior is designed to minimize fraying. If you intend to use this as gaming travel gear, that’s a necessity. The rubber bottom is very high quality as well, preventing a no-slip surface when you’re in less than ideal conditions.

The Pricing

The quality of these products are stellar across the board, and that means that the value of this set is going to come down to how much you like the aesthetics and how much you’re willing to pay for that privilege. Fortunately, the difference in pricing is practically a pittance. The Goliathus mouse pad comes in at the same price, while the Atheris and BlackWidow Lite are just an extra 10 bucks each. Considering the whole set without Star Wars branding would cost you around $175, that’s practically negligible. It’s a fantastic bargain for a well thought out and limited edition design.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a Star Wars fan and a serious gamer, this set is a no-brainer. Razer is offering some of their best budget-range gaming gear with a sleek Star Wars theme, and it comes in practically at the same price as the standard edition. That means you don’t need to have an internal debate about these peripherals. If you like the design (and you’re okay with smaller mice), go ahead and pull the trigger. You won’t be disappointed with the performance.
